When Opel was a subsidiary of GM one of the vehicles they shared was the Mokka / Encore. Now that they have split ways, I do believe these are the first vehicles where we can see how they have diverged to the next generation.
We now have the new GM designed Buick Encore GX, and the PSA designed Opel Mokka. Buick has maintained its reserved upscale mainstream styling, while Opel was free to go a more daring route.
Both are a huge improvement over the egg-shaped previous generation where length was added vs the height for better proportions.
Who do you think did it better?

The Encore GX is an improvement over the Encore, but the Mokka is now aiming for a younger market segment. I applaud both companies for directions they have chosen. The Buick will appeal to middle age Americans, the Mokka will appeal to young families.

Huh, we actually get to see some influence from the (pre-PSA sale) GT concept.

Opel...by far....it at least looks interesting an seems like it can be had with a splash of color, which is sorely lacking on a lot of North American domestic products...

Does the Mokka come in Cappuccino brown? :P

I think I like the Opel exterior a bit better, especially the front, but I prefer the shot of the Buick interior.

I was watching a GX review earlier and idk, it just made me kinda feel sad, it’s so uninspiring and it just doesn’t feel confident either in design or in market placement. What does GX mean anyway?
On the other hand, the Mokka is awesome! T he character they’ve given it from the heritage design ideas to the new, more angular and confident lines are really well-executed; it seems like Adam meets Manta. I am very impressed, PSA.

The Encore ST trim actually has some red in the front

This new Mokka would have technically been partially designed while still under GM. So both vehicles are each brands’ take as an evolution of that styling. You can really see it in the front and rear lights.

Still worse!

Its very, very hard for me to get even slightly interested in either of these, but I guess the Opel is the better design. Still a bit like choosing between a colonoscopy and a root canal, though.

What I prefer is irrelevant since GM is gone from this market and the Mokka will (if it turns up at all) come here as either a Peugeot or Citroen.

The Opel is mike's more daring and distinctive than the Buick and in my opinion flat out looks a lot better too. That said, I'll take the GM interior.

...by PSA. This is a PSA vehicle with an Opel skin. There is nothing GM left other than optics , which makes sense as PSA bought Opel for its name recognition, market share and infrastructure. Not its GM tech. The new Mokka is on a PSA platform with PSA engines and an optional fully electric drivetrain. Everything GM has been phased out.

In China, they get an all new second generation Buick Encore , along with a slighter bigger version called the Encore GX.
The Encore GX is sold in North
America, but they
are
not getting the new Encore, with the old version still riding out for now.

Oh this is far from the first time, for one example look at the Ford Galaxy and the Volkswagen Sharan.

I was specifically addressing the GM/Opel split. This is the first vehicle from them that was once the same and each model has gone in a new direction.
I was interested in seeing what they agreed to as to who gets to keep the brand styling. The rumor is that GM agreed to come up with all new styling. T he next new Buick unveiled, which should be an EV, is supposed to debut Buick’s all new styling direction.
Is This the New Design Language For Buick?

Yes, I know. That’s the whole point of this post. T o see how GM and Opel/PSA diverged on styling on a vehicle that was once the same. But the brand styling developed while fully under GM has still had some influence.

Oh ok, I see what you mean. Yeah I’m pretty sure the Mokka and Encore is the first design split. Although China did recently get a new Verano, which was originally an Opel Astra, although a new gen Astra isn’t out yet to compare , and probably won’ t be available with a trunk.
It’s pretty funny how due to all the rebadging, Buick, Opel/Vauxhall and Holden were all left with the exact same corporate face , with the little wings in the grille.

yeah, but still, what is a GX?

Beats me, I guess they’re were trying to emulate Gran Sport, or
GS.
It isn’t the only Buick with a GX name, it’s also used for the Buick Excelle GX, which is an estate version of the Excelle GT saloon.
So m y guess would be Gran Xtra.
